8:00a.m. Quality of equine care: Where can it go wrong? – Joop Loomans
In an increasingly litigious world, it is important to ask whether the standards of equine veterinary care meet client expectations, and whether there are adequate safeguards to prevent failure of care. Changes in society at large and in the veterinary profession in particular, mean that the time is ripe for self-reflection. This presentation will systematically evaluate the quality of equine veterinary care using court cases against equine practitioners and a recent survey on equine veterinary care at international top sport level.
8:40a.m. Communications and risk management – Kathleen Bonvacini
In this session, Dr. Bonvicini will discuss research evidence showing a strong correlation between communication and health outcomes for practice success. Dr. Bonvicini will present communication principles and tools that have been shown to be effective in rebuilding trust with clients in high stakes discussions, including those following medical error and adverse events. The presentation will include an evidence- based model for use in practice to guide veterinarians in these discussions to restore client trust and reduce malpractice risk. The format will include slide presentation, interactive exercise, video case review and opportunity for question and answer.
