Avenues (Old)

AAEP Avenues is a program designed to encourage current veterinary students and new graduates to take advantage of the practical training in medicine and practice management offered by AAEP-member practices. Externships and internships allow students and new veterinarians to learn and perfect technical and client skills. Practices benefit from the enthusiastic help of the extern or intern, as well as their access to recent clinical information and new ideas.

AVENUES MISSON STATEMENT: The AAEP Avenues program's mission is to further the professional development of it's members and provide resources, leadership and mentorship for the new generation of equine prctitioners in order to improve the health and welfare of the horse.
Because many internship positions require that students complete an externship at the practice before applying for an internship position, the AAEP has recently added an externship listing service to its Avenues program. Each externship profile will specify how the interested student should apply. Students should contact each practice directly. To list an externship in the database, members may fill out and submit an externship profile form. If the practice has an internship listing, both listings will be linked together.

The AAEP serves as a coordinator to help practices set up internships - or list existing internships offered by members. Any student that will have successfully completed an equine large animal clinical rotation and will graduate before the internship begins is eligible to apply. Recent graduates are also eligible. Students are encouraged to contact practices early in the fall, to make sure all requirements (such as an interview or externship) can be completed. Application requirements, deadlines and acceptance notification vary from practice to practice. The AAEP Avenues application form, available here, may be required by some practices. No materials should be submitted or copied to AAEP headquarters.

Note: These internships and externships are not governed by AAEP. We are a resource to provide information regarding opportunities in the equine industry. Veterinarians who offer these positions are AAEP members in good standing.

This manual is an effort by the AAEP to help practices listed as part of Avenues to have successful internship programs. This manual is one way to help prepare your new intern for their year in your practice.

MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR PRACTICES TO HOST AN INTERNSHIP: All AAEP Avenues practices are asked to fulfill each intern's AAEP membership dues (U.S. $65), if the intern is a recent graduate (a graduate of a veterinary school within the last year). Dues notices will be mailed to each Avenues practice prior to June 1.

As an added benefit to interns, the American Livestock Insurance Company (ALSIC) will sponsor membership dues of any recent graduate for one year following the conclusion of their Avenues internship position, provided they were a national AAEP student member. Therefore, it is to the student and practice's advantage if the incoming intern is a current national student member of the AAEP. Please note--in order for dues to be $65/intern, the recent graduate(s) must have been a national student member of the AAEP in good standing prior to graduation, otherwise, dues are $115.
