Type of Practice:  Old Dominion Equine Associates is an ambulatory practice serving the equestrian community of Central Virginia.
Facilities: Our office, located in Keswick VA, features a fully stocked equine pharmacy, in-house laboratory, and digital media viewing room. The practice operates 4 field vehicles, equipped with digital radiography, digital ultrasound, endoscopy, and shockwave.

Case Load:  The primary emphasis of the practice is to provide complete ambulatory veterinary care to the sport horse, thoroughbred, and breeding farms of central Virginia. Sport horse and lameness work includes, but is not limited to, all levels of hunters, jumpers, eventers, dressage horses, and throroughbred racehorses. Reproductive caseload includes both thoroughbred and warmblood breeding farms, routine mare and stallion management, as well as many advanced assisted reproductive techniques.

Estimated Breakdown of Daily or Weekly Load:
Appointments are scheduled Monday through Saturday morning. Work on Sunday is generally limited to emergencies and continuing care of patients.
Goals of Externship:
We hope to provide veterinary students with exposure to a high quality sport horse practice and for the practice to develop relationships with potential interns. We aim to provide a hands-on experience that cannot be achieved in the classroom.
Prerequisites for Externship:
Externs should have a strong interest in equine practice along with a good work ethic and positive attitude.
Application for Externship:
The application includes: Cover Letter, Resume, and a completed 'externship application (available at www.olddominionequine.com/contact_us.php) Externships are generally filled on a first come basis although 4th year students are given priority.
Dates and Duration:
The practice is open to externs from March through October. Externship duration is typically 2-3 weeks.
Practice Responsibilities to the Extern:
To provide a positive environment for learning and to introduce the extern to high quality equine sports medicine and reproduction.
Externship Responsibilities to the Practice:
To assist the veterinarians in daily work. Externs are expected to be available for emergency work.

Externs are responsible for their own insurance. Student professional liability insurance can be obtained from AVMA-PLIT.
