Staffing Number and Tasks: There are currently 5 full time veterinarians, day technicians, five after-hour technicians, one practice manager, and one receptionist.
Type of Practice: 100% Equine- in-house, referral and field service. With two Board Certified Surgeons and one Board Certified Internist on staff, we provide referral service to Vermont, western New Hampshire, and upstate New York. In house, we do elective and emergency soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, as well as lameness, neonatal medicine, colic, respiratory, and neurologic cases. Our field service includes routine care, reproduction, lameness with digital radiography, ultrasonography, and shockwave, and portable gastroscopy. We provide 24-hour emergency in-house, referral, and field service.
Facilities: 10,000 square foot referral center with 9 stalls, including neonatal and isolation stalls. Surgery suite with ventilator, blood gas capability, and anesthetic monitoring. In-house laboratory with CBC, Chemistry, fibrinogen, and joint and belly fluid analysis. We have 2 digital radiography units (Eklin and Idexx), 3 scopes, 3 ultrasounds, and shockwave, which we use both in-house and in the field. Extern housing on-site with laundry , sleeping quarters and kitchen.

Case Load: 50% field, 50% referral/in-house cases. We treat a variety of sport and pleasure horses, with the majority being hunters/jumpers, dressage, and other show horses.
Types of Cases (estimated % by system or categories):
In-house and referral: 20% medical and surgical colics, 10% neonates, 25% lameness/orthopedic, 10% endoscopy/gastroscopy, 15% elective surgeries, and 20% other medicine cases. Field: 40% routine care, 25% emergencies, 20% reproductive, 15% lameness.
Estimated Breakdown of Daily or Weekly Load:
We assign strong intern participation and responsibility with in house cases and surgeries. A portion of the work will be field service with general practice, preventative medicine, lameness and reproduction. We feel the intern should become comfortable with working up emergency cases, feel comfortable with surgeries and OR procedures, and become proficient with equine anesthesia. Once comfortable with management of cases the intern will be on primary call 3/5 weekends. The intern is expected to come in on all surgical and in house medical cases.
Philosophy of Internship:
The Vermont Large Animal Clinic internship will provide the intern with a broad exposure of case types and experience in an easy going environment. We are committed to having the intern exposed to all facets of a high quality equine practice. At the completion of the internship the candidate should feel comfortable with the decision making process and treatment protocols in medicine, surgery, reproduction and ambulatory care. With the acquired experience the intern will be well suited to pursue a career in private practice or to continue on in a residency. It is important to provide the intern with a friendly working environment.
Prerequisites of Application and Internship:

Employee Benefits:
AVMA/AAEP dues, Vermont state license fee, malpractice insurance, health insurance, dental and eye insurance, stipend for continuing education. Intern will also receive a cell phone and full use of fully equipped practice vehicle.
Employment Contracts:
Written 12 month contract with non-compete agreement. Term starts early June.

List of Internship Duties in Practice:
The practice has routine appointments on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings are reserved for in house appointments and surgeries with the afternoons used for routine cases if necessary. In the beginning the intern will work directly with our veterinarians and will be scheduled for solo appointments as competence and confidence evolve. In surgery the intern will rotate between anesthesia and serving as the assistant surgeon. The intern will be responsible for in-patient care management. The responsibilities of the intern will continuously grow during the year with the acquired experience.
Emergency Duty Requirements:
Initially the intern will accompany the veterinarians on-call on emergencies. The intern will monitor and care for in-patients that require after hours care. Once competent the intern will have 50% primary, 50% secondary in field, 100% in house.
Amount of Supervision:
High levels initially, as confidence and competence progress, supervision will decrease.
Internship Salary:
$23,000 with benefits and 1 week paid vacation in addition to use of practice vehicle. Total package including benefits exceeds $30,000.
