Avenues for Students

Avenues Externships
An externship may be your first opportunity to work in an equine medicine facility. And because many internship positions require that students complete an externship at the practice before applying for an internship position, the AAEP also offers externship listings (more information on internships is listed below). Each externship profile will specify how you should apply. Students should contact each practice directly.

Avenues Internships

The AAEP helps practices and students connect for internships. You are eligible to apply if you have successfully completed an equine large animal clinical rotation and will graduate before the internship begins. Recent graduates are also eligible. Students are encouraged to contact practices early in the fall to ensure all requirements (such as an interview or externship) can be completed.
Practices are allowed to offer internship positions throughout the year, but cannot require a commitment from you the student until the Friday preceding the AAEP Annual Convention. The AAEP Avenues application form, available here, may be required by some practices. No materials should be submitted or copied to AAEP headquarters.

The list gives guidelines for skills and techniques you should be comfortable with by the time you graduate or by or after one year out of veterinary school. Save this list to help guide you studies and your externships.
