Owner Education Event CalendarAAEP Owner Education Speaking Opportunities If you are interested in speaking at an event or would like more information, please contact Dana Kirkland, owner education coordinator, in the AAEP office at (859) 233-0147 or dkirkland@aaep.org.
Purina Mills HOW® Workshops The time is here once again for exciting veterinary opportunities, the Purina Mills Horse Owner Workshop (HOW®). These events are billed as the number one horse owner educational event in the U.S. The “edutainment” event brings together top clinicians, trainers, equine experts and the veterinarian to help give the horse owning public an enhanced understanding of their horses and how to better care for them. Purina Mills’ dealers host the events in local markets, allowing for program customization while providing a forum for local topics of interest and specific horse health issues to be addressed. AAEP has also made it easier for the veterinarian not to turn down a speaking opportunity. The AAEP has built a collection of PowerPoint presentations based on the Bayer educational brochure series. These custom-designed, ready-to-use presentations are perfect to use when talking to large groups of horse owners about equine health. Each presentation can be downloaded to your computer directly from the AAEP Web site or is available on CD-ROM. To request a presentation on CD-ROM, contact Dana Kirkland at dkirkland@aaep.org. There is no charge for the CD. HOW® events are held Jan-April, and are being formed right now. Veterinarians who participate receive 20 bags of Premium Purina® Horse Feed and are automatically entered into the HOW Veterinary Sweepstakes where one lucky winner will receive a trip to the 2010 Annual AAEP Convention, which will take place in Baltimore, Maryland. Veterinarians who wish to participate are encouraged to contact their Purina Mills feed specialist for details. Purina Mills feed specialists and a schedule of events can be found at www.equinevetnutrition.com or by calling (800) 227-8941. If you enjoy educating horse owners and already spend time on your computer each day, consider helping through the Ask the Vet forum, a monthly question-and-answer column on the Horse Owner section where horse owners pose questions to the AAEP "Expert" on a specific topic. Topics of interest may include internal parasite control (deworming), skin problems, hoof abscesses (what to expect), how to keep your horse "performance ready" and dental care. You are also welcome to pose your own selected topics and areas of interest. To participate, please send your area of interest/expertise, along with a current vitae, to Dana Kirkland at dkirkland@aaep.org. Available Ask the Vet months for 2010 include:January, April, June - September |
