Focus on Upper and Lower Respiratory Diseases
Focus on Upper and Lower Respiratory Diseases, guided by experts in the field, will explore, in-depth, equine respiratory diseases. The program is designed to give the attendee a detailed understanding of the subject matter including:
Speaker: Dr. Schumacher
• A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses of horses and the surgical concepts associated with exploration of the paranasal sinuses either endoscopically or through a frontonasal osteoplastic flap.
• A good knowledge of the diseases of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. • A thorough understanding of how to treat horses effectively for many diseases of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. This will include the concepts associate with surgical treatment of the paranasal sinuses through a frontonasal osteoplastic flap created with the horse standing. Speaker: Dr. Ducharme
• A thorough understanding of equine laryngeal dysfunction that will include:
1. Correlation of resting endoscopic exam, resting ultrasonographic exam, and treadmill findings. 2. Surgical alternatives for sport horses and racehorses 3. Timing of surgery for laryngeal dysfunction • A thorough understanding of palatopharyngeal disorders that will include:
1. Etiology of DDSP 2. Treatment of intermittent and permanent DDSP 3. Dorsal nasopharyngeal collapse treatment • A thorough understanding of laser surgery of the upper respiratory tract that will include:
1. Epiglottic entrapment: should we incise or remove the membrane 2. How to perform laser staphylectomy 3. Tips for laser ventriculocordectomy Speaker: Dr. Woodie
• How to evaluate the horse with a respiratory noise:
1. Review normal anatomy of the upper respiratory tract including guttural pouches 2. Learn the different upper respiratory tract abnormalities that can be diagnosed at rest 3. Learn what information that can be obtained using laryngeal ultrasound • Treadmill evaluation of upper airway function:
1. Learn case selection for a dynamic evaluation of the upper airway 2. Learn the effect of head and neck position on upper airway function 3. Learn the different upper airway abnormalities that can be diagnosed at exercise • A thorough understanding of disorders and surgery of the trachea
1. Learn how to perform an emergency tracheotomy 2. Learn the indications for a permanent tracheostomy 3. Learn how to diagnose tracheal collapse Program:

Purpose:
The Focus Meeting experience provides the attendees with in-depth CE in one topic area. The overall content and educational experience will be similar in approach and delivery to that of the Annual Meeting but will cover a greater breadth and depth of the topic than is possible at the AAEP Convention. |
