Meet the Chairman
C. Wayne McIlwraith, BVSc, Ph.D., DSc, FRCVS, Diplomate ACVS, a Colorado State University professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, director of the Orthopaedic Research Center, and Barbara Cox Anthony University Endowed Chair has accepted the position as chair of the AAEP Foundation Advisory Committee. His history of accomplishments as a researcher, clinician and educator can be seen in his leadership and development of numerous programs at Colorado State including the Musculoskeletal Research Group, a program of research and scholarly excellence.
A native of New Zealand, Dr. McIlwraith joined Colorado State in 1979 as an equine surgeon with a research focus in orthopedics. After 15 years as an equine surgeon he became director of the Equine Sciences Program in 1994 accompanying development of the Orthopaedic Research Center, both the facilities and personnel being completely funded by private donations and research grants. He received the Scholarship Impact Award in 2007 from Colorado State University (which is the highest research award from CSU) and has received a number of international honors, including the John Hickman award for equine orthopedics from the British Equine Veterinary Association, four Honorary Doctorates, the Schering-Plough Award for Equine Applied Research from the World Equine Veterinary Association, Founder’s Award for lifetime achievement from the American College of Veterinary Surgeon’s and was the Frank J. Milne State-of-the-Art Lecturer at the AAEP's Annual Convention in 2005.
Dr. McIlwraith brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to the AAEP Foundation Advisory Committee. His history of active involvement in the AAEP includes serving as president of the association in 2001 as well as having served as the chair of numerous committees including the Ethics and Professional Conduct Committee, the President's Advisory Committee, the Research Committee, and the Educational Programs Committee. He has also been a member of the AAEP ‘On Call’ program since the program’s inception and was recently named chair of the Equine Research Coordination Group.
