Research ProgramsThe AAEP Foundation's goal is to be the authority to identify, focus on and promote equine research and disseminate the results. Research Grants Unsolicited Grants: (Investigator Driven) The AAEP Foundation currently does not accept or fund unsolicited grants for equine research projects. We do, however, recommend that you contact one of the below Equine Foundations as they all fund research projects. American Quarter Horse FoundationGrayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation Morris Animal Foundation Research Priorities Survey and Report This project identifies current and pressing health issues and sets the stage for what the AAEP Foundation and industry should address in the future. Survey and reports were conducted and completed in 2003, and again in 2009.To access the 2009 Research Priorities Survey Report, click here. Equineresearch.net Designed to promote and identify current projects via an on-line catalog of ongoing research studies, this Web site decreases unnecessary duplication of research and fosters sharing of information between researchers. To access this Web site click here. Equine Research Coordination Group The Equine Research Coordination Group (ERCG) is a group comprised of researchers and organizations that support equine research. Participants in the ERCG include equine foundations and multiple university research representatives. The goals of the ERCG are to: 1. Increase funding for equine research. Research Panel Conclusions The AAEP Foundation regularly convenes panels of equine researchers to determine the future needs and directions of pressing health issues. White papers of the following panel conclusions are available below. * 10th International Equine Colic Research Symposium Panel ReportThe AAEP Foundation and multiple sponsors hosted the 10th International Equine Colic Research Symposium, July 26-28, 2011, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Symposium, alternating every three years between Europe and North America, is designed to bring together leading researchers, practitioners, residents and graduate students to share knowledge about equine colic, the leading cause of premature death in horses. As with previous symposiums, this meeting facilitated the exchange of new information about colic among investigators while stimulating new collaborations and ideas for research projects. This year’s symposium attracted top researchers from around the world to present the newest information on a variety of colic-related topics. A total of 45 oral presentations and 72 poster presentations were presented during the Symposium. The meeting and panel discussions were held following the AAEP Respiratory Focus Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 20-21. A total of 21 researchers and airway experts from around the world attended. The meeting format included abstract presentations by 13 panelists during the morning session to provide information about the current state of the art in several areas of research. A round table discussion and breakout sessions were held in the afternoon to answer specific questions about the direction and cost of future research in equine airways. Nearly 50 researchers and laminitis experts from around the world met to prioritize future laminitis research needs. The group also explored specific questions about the direction and cost of future laminitis projects. In the two-day workshop, presentations and discussions of varied topics ranged from inflammation, vascular, endothelial dysfunction, insulin resistance to biomechanics and chronic pain management. The group learned there is much information being generated on the topic of laminitis and they will seek answers to the many questions that loom surrounding this disease. A “World Café” session posed a special opportunity for attendees to delve into 10 important questions that will guide a plan for future research efforts and the corresponding funding needs and establish a timetable to accomplish the industry’s vision - “to conquer laminitis by 2020.” Click here to view the final reports, articles and abstracts developed to provide information and direction for the future of laminitis research. * Lameness Research Meeting and Panel Report On Aug. 1, 2007, the AAEP Foundation hosted a Lameness Research Meeting and Panel in Fort Collins, Colo. A total of 24 researchers and lameness experts from around the world met to prioritize future lameness research. The meeting format included abstract presentations by 12 panelists during the morning session to provide information on the current state of the art in several areas of research. A roundtable discussion and breakout sessions were held in the afternoon to answer specific questions about the direction and cost of future research in equine lameness. Click here to view a PDF of the report. * Equine Research Summit Summary The AAEP Foundation convened a summit of representatives from the research community, research funders, government and other stakeholders in equine research on April 19-20, 2006, in Lexington, Ky. Agenda topics included attracting more researchers to the profession, procuring more funding and promoting more collaboration among researchers and institutions. Click here to download the Executive Summary of the recommendations advanced by the participants in the summit, and the preliminary steps proposed to initiate action on them. * Colic Research Panel Report Immediately following the Eighth International Equine Colic Research Symposium, held in August 2005 in Quebec City, Canada, the Colic Research Panel met to discuss the future direction of research on equine colic. That meeting produced the Colic Research Panel Report. The AAEP Foundation, with the support of AAEP Educational Partner Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, put the Symposium together as a way to exchange information about colic among researchers, help increase collaboration and stimulate new research. Topics ranged from the latest information on colic, to shock, gastric ulcers, intestinal motility and diagnosis of the acute abdomen. Many of the advances that will affect the way veterinarians treat colic and related problems in the next few years were presented at this series of lectures and poster sessions. The group addressed the questions provided by Nathaniel White, II, DVM, on behalf of the AAEP Foundation. Infectious and non-infectious diseases were considered separately. In each section of the report, there is a statement of issues followed by a list of research priorities. Click here to view a PDF of this report. * Laminitis Research Panel Report The first-ever Equine Laminitis Research Panel and Meeting, held in July 2004, met to summarize the state of laminitis research. A list of those conclusions and recommendations to help direct future research is available below. More than 40 researchers and graduate students from around the world as well as representatives from the equine industry, funding foundations and equine publications participated in the Equine Laminitis Research Panel and Meeting. The AAEP Foundation, American Quarter Horse Association Foundation, Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and Morris Animal Foundation sponsored the event. Click here to view a PDF of this report. Other Research Programs Animal Research Campaign In 2005 the AAEP Foundation made a founding contribution to and was instrumental in launching the Horse Facts Campaign. Managed by the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) and launched with a December 2005 media briefing at the AAEP’s Annual Convention in Seattle, Wash., this educational program’s goal is to promote public understanding, respect and support for the vital role that humane and responsible animal research plays in advancing equine health and medicine.
