Heaves White Paper Photos

Caption for above photos:

Endoscopic image of excess mucus (M) within the windpipe (trachea) of a horse with heaves. Numerous inflammatory cells known as neutrophils are visible in a sample of the mucus.

Caption for above photos:

Small air passage (bronchiole, Br) from a healthy horse and from a horse with heaves. In the horse with heaves, the bronchiole is obstructed by mucus (M) and its wall is extremely thickened. By contrast, in the healthy lung, the bronchiole is unobstructed and its wall is thin. The thin-walled alveoli (A) where gas exchange occurs are also visible.
