Fractures, Fragments, Failures and Fixes - Larry R. Bramlage

Dr. Larry Bramlage is a 1975 graduate of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (DVM 1975). He did an internship (’75-’76) at Colorado State University and a residency at the Ohio State University (’76-78). He received a master of science degree from The Ohio State University (MS 1978). He holds a Diploma of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Diplomate ACVS, 1983). After his residency he remained at the The Ohio State University as an equine surgeon and faculty member. He served as equine chairman of the A-O/ASIF Principles Course on the Fixation of Fractures from 1978 until 1990. He developed the AO/ASIF Advanced Course on Fracture Fixation and is currently co-chairman of the course. In 1984 he was named an associate professor and the head of Equine Medicine and Surgery at The Ohio State University. He operated a consulting surgical practice in addition to his faculty position. In 1989 he moved to Lexington, Ky., where he is now a partner in the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.

Dr. Bramlage is an internationally recognized equine orthopedic surgeon. He is a past president of the AAEP, and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He participates in the "On Call" program to provide veterinary expertise during media coverage of major horseracing events including the Triple Crown and Breeder's Cup races. Bramlage has chaired and participated in many AAEP committees.

In recognition of his dedication and contribution to Thoroughbred racing, Dr. Bramlage was awarded the 1994 Jockey Club Gold Medal. He is a director of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, and for ten years, he was chairman of the Research Advisory Committee of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. His additional honors include the 1997 Tierklink Hochmoor Prize for his pioneering work regarding the internal fixation of fractures, and the 1998 Distinguished Alumnus award from The Ohio State University, an Alumni Fellow Award from Kansas State University, and the British Equine Veterinary Association's Special Award of Merit. He was elected to membership in The Jockey Club in 2002. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the AAEP and in 2008 he was named an AAEP Distinguished Lifetime Member.

Dr. Bramlage has authored over 100 peer reviewed publications, along with numerous book chapters. He has spoken internationally on many occasions on the subject of equine surgery, and has given the keynote address at the British Equine Veterinary Association, and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Dr. Bramlage considers his work with internal fixation techniques in the horse as chairman of the AO/ASIF Course, and the development of many of the techniques currently used in fracture fixation in the horse as his most significant contribution to the veterinary profession.

The Frank J. Milne Lecture debuted at the 1997 convention in Phoenix, Arizona. Named for AAEP past president and distinguished life member Frank J. Milne, the lecture series features “state of the art” information on subjects and techniques considered important by the equine veterinary profession.

This lab will present cases that illustrate the importance of dental radiography in the management of dental cases involving the following dental diseases/ procedures: uncomplicated extraction, evaluation of cavities (fractures, tooth decay and resorptive lesion), and periodontics. The case histories, with intraoral photographs and pretreatment radiographs, will be made available to the lab participants before the lab. During the lab, the panel members will discuss each case and provide further information on how the case was actually managed, including follow-up radiography and the case outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on radiographic technique, radiographic anatomy and signs of pathology, and interpretation of radiographic signs. Prior experience with dental radiology is not prerequisite for this lab.

These cases will be presented by the "experts" and then audience interaction will be encouraged as attendees ask questions and stimulate further conversation. The cost to attend is $50. Each lab will be limited to 100 attendees. Ticket required for admission.

The case histories with intraoral photographs and pretreatment radiographs will be made available to the lab participants before the lab. During the lab, the panel members will discuss each case and provide further information on how the case was actually managed, including further diagnostic imaging modalities (e.g. CT) that may have been used, follow-up radiography, and the case outcomes. Prior experience with dental radiology is recommended for this lab since the emphasis will be placed on the diagnostic interpretation of imaging and the management of advanced dental cases.

Nutrition – Ray Geor and Tania Cubitt

The goal of this lab is to improve practitioners ability to evaluate feeding programs and develop dietary recommendations for healthy horses at different life stages and functions, as well as animals with disease conditions in which alterations in diet are indicated (e.g. chronic muscle disorders, equine metabolic syndrome, equine Cushing’s disease, obesity). The first part of the lab will cover clinical evaluation of nutritional status and methods for evaluation of feeds and rations, including proximate nutrient analysis and the use of software programs that compare estimated nutrient intake with evidence-based feeding standards. The second part will consist of a series of case problems in which clinical data along with dietary information will be presented. Participants will be given time to interpret the data and develop recommendations for feeding management. Cases will then be discussed as a group.

Conditions considered include: PSL enthesiopathy, medial meniscus, DDFT in the foot, SDFT Pastern, acetabular fracture or coxofemoral, C6-C7 arthrosis, third peroneus rupture, and osteochondrosis shoulder. Each condition will include presentation of the case and discussion of diagnosis and treatment.
