Call for Practice Management and Personal Wellness Papers for AAEP 2009 Convention

Members of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and other individuals are invited to submit Practice Management and Personal Wellness Papers for consideration for presentation during the 55th AAEP Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, December 5-9, 2009.

AAEP realizes the importance of institutionalizing practice management as part of their continuing education offerings. To ensure that proper consideration and planning is devoted to this endeavor, AAEP is dedicating one half day at the 2009 Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada to a Practice Management and Personal Wellness session.

Guidelines

Practice Management and Personal Wellness papers will be presented for the purpose of updating the membership on a new subject or for discussing information that may be controversial.  The aim of the paper is to help the membership put the information in perspective, and to make judgments on different views about a particular topic.  These papers will not principally present original data. The goal is to clarify existing knowledge on a subject and help the membership better use the information in their day-to-day practice.

Agreement and disagreement within the subject matter should be identified along with the strengths and limitations of the information sources.  Reference should be made to the authors who generally support the opinions stated. The author’s perspective, including his/her own interpretation of the information if it is different from previously published opinions, should be included. The end of the discussion should contain a summary and the conclusion that the author has drawn for the audience, based upon the reviewed data. A “Take Home Message” should be provided by the author that summarizes the practical application of the information for the practitioner.

Practice Management and Personal Wellness papers should include an introduction, a general overview of the problem or topic to be addressed, a description of the techniques to be applied, discussion of any results of research or related information, or recommendation of any management techniques, references, and acknowledgments. Since personal experience and opinion are used for these presentations, the papers should reflect opinions and what is factual from previous work or publications.

Illustrations should be provided in high resolution (at least 300 dpi). If previously published material is submitted, including text, photographs or drawings, the author must acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holders (author and publisher) to reproduce the material.  This permission must accompany the original manuscript at the time of submission.

Papers for these sessions may be solicited by the program chair for specific topics that the Educational Program Committee (EPC) decides are timely for presentation. Sessions may be interactive or panel discussions. The EPC Subcommittee in charge of these seminars will select the presentations in accord with the program chair and the chair of the EPC.  This selection will be based on the evaluation of the paper and the relevance of the topic to the seminar and membership.

Presentations submitted for panel discussions should contain an outline of the topics to be discussed. Often workbooks are used in these sessions and they should be submitted with the initial manuscript whenever possible.

  • There is no word limit for Practice Management papers.
  • Clearly identify author and title for each item.
  • All papers submitted must include a current return address, e-mail address, and phone and fax numbers.
  • All papers must be submitted to Carey Ross at cross@aaep.orgbefore March 31, 2009.

Papers may be solicited by the Program Chair, but will be accepted by the Educational Programs Committee only after critical review.
