Dr. John Mitchell Named 2010 AAEP Vice President

September 14, 2009

John Mitchell, DVM, a racetrack practitioner in Pompano Beach, Fla., has been selected as the 2010 AAEP vice president.  With this appointment, he will serve as AAEP president in 2012.   Dr. Mitchell will be sworn in as a member of the Executive Committee during the association’s 55th Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., in December.

Dr. Mitchell is a standardbred racetrack practitioner at Pompano Park.  His practice focuses on performance exams, diagnostic procedures and the economic investments of clients. He was the owner of Equine Associates in Boca Raton, Fla., from 1975 to 1995.

An active AAEP member since 1972, Dr. Mitchell has served on the Educational Programs, Racing, Practice Management and Foundation Advisory committees. He held the office of AAEP treasurer from 2002-2005, and has been instrumental in the development of programs for the annual AAEP Practice Management Seminar and co-chaired the meeting in 2002.

Dr. Mitchell is a native of Cadiz, Ohio, and gained an early interest in veterinary medicine while growing up next door to a veterinarian. After graduating from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1972, he completed an internship at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to the AAEP, Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Florida Veterinary Medical Association.

He has two sons, Kyle and Todd, and recently welcomed a grandson to the family. Dr. Mitchell and his wife, Melodie, enjoy family, travelling and photography. Dr. Mitchell also spends his leisure time fishing offshore.

Dr. Mitchell said his involvement in the AAEP has had a positive influence on his career. “The AAEP has provided me with timely, quality, peer-reviewed scientific information to help keep me current in caring for my equine patients. The AAEP’s practice management and business continuing education has facilitated quality medical care for my horses and has allowed me to run a successful business,” he explained. “The many friends and relationships I have through the AAEP have helped shape my life.”

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, the AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its nearly 10,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
