12:30-3:30 Topics in Equine Behavior -Dr. Sue McDonnell, Ph.D
Complaint of a Problematic Behavior Change: Is it Physical, Psychological or Both? A series of cases will be presented to demonstrate methods used to evaluate the root causes and secondary components of common behavioral changes in horses.
| Science-Based Applied Equine Behavior Modification for Veterinarians This session will focus on the application of principles for behavior modification and prevention of common aversions to veterinary treatments, loading for transport and other common challenges with equine patients. Step-by-step protocols will be detailed for maintaining the cooperation of your equine patients in specific scenarios.
| Mare and Foal Behavior for Veterinarians Topics addressed during this session will include basic natural parental behavior in horses, common maternal behavior and bonding problems seen in domestic horses, and raising an orphan foal. |
3:30-5:30Challenges in the Peripartum Period – Margo Macpherson, DVM, MS, DACT, Benjamin M.K. Espy, DVM, DACT, and Elizabeth S. Metcalf, DVM, MS, DACT
A late-stage crisis truly tests the veterinarian’s ability to maintain a healthy mare throughout her pregnancy. Attendees will be presented with cases of conditions affecting the late pregnant and postpartum mare.

The Road Warrior's Approach to Practicing Good Medicine in the Field: Respiratory, Gastrointestinal and Fluid Therapy –Dr. Robert P. Franklin
Dr. Robert Franklin will guide attendees in learning how to work up and treat a variety of cases with limitations in a field setting. Video demonstrations and Turning Point interactive cases will be used to encourage discussion among attendees.
Equine Medicine Field Tactics 101: Procedures and Therapies for Respiratory Conditions
This session will address how to work up and treat common respiratory conditions including chronic cough, Strangles, pneumonia, Inflammatory Airway Disease, Viral Respiratory infections, Rhodococcus equi and other foal pneumonias.
| Equine Medicine Field Tactics 102: Procedures & Therapies for Gastrointestinal Conditions
Topics discussed will include gastrointestinal conditions such as chronic and acute diarrhea in the adult, diarrhea in the foal, liver disease, weight loss, ultrasound of the abdomen and colic.
| Equine Medicine Field Tactics 103- Procedures & Therapies for Fluid Therapy
Topics discussed will include catheter choices, administration options, fluid choices, farm-based parenteral nutrition, fluid additives and a review of fluid requirements. |
| 10:30-11:20 | Discussion of Recent Outbreaks of EHV/EHM: What Do We Know and What Do We Still Need to Know? – Josie L. Traub-Dargatz, DVM, MS, DACVIM
Dr. Traub-Dargatz will review relevant information regarding recent outbreaks of Equine Herpes Virus and Mylencephalopathy. Attendees will discuss incidence, demographics and tools for diagnosing, reporting and managing these diseases.

Drs. McDonnell, Espy, Metcalf, Traub-Dargatz and Franklin will lead small groups of attendees in discussions topics relevant to equine behavior, reproduction and internal medicine. The goal of this session is to provide an open forum with participants and speakers in a moderated environment. |

Reconstructive Surgical Procedures to Enhance Mare Fertility
This session will focus on the common surgical procedures that can be performed in the field to enhance a mare’s fertility. Dr. Rodgerson will emphasize the use of practical techniques and present lessons learned from past mistakes.
| Recovering from Dystocia: Repair of the Mare
An injury to the mare’s reproductive tract from foaling can potentially be life-threatening. Dr. Rodgerson will provide overview of various types of injuries and describe treatment methods used to save the mare and restore her future fertility. | Colic: Is Cutting Always the Cure?
Attendees will review aspects for managing colic in the field and the hospital, with consideration of medical and surgical management of these conditions.
| Laparoscopic Surgery: When to Refer
Attendees will learn about the advantages of laparoscopic surgery, which is commonly performed at equine referral facilities, and receive guidance on referring a patient for this procedure. |
